Chapter Seventeen

The foyer of the Pendleton mansion was larger than Rim Jumper’s cargo bay. A dozen liveried staff lined the walls on either side of the room, attentive for the slightest sign that a guest might require something. There were thirty of forty of those guests milling around, greeting friends or new faces before moving on to the other rooms of the house open to the party. Servers carrying trays with drinks and food weaved through it all, with a grace that had to be admired.

Kole picked up two glasses of sparkling wine from one tray, handing a glass to Neela. “Sip slowly,” he said in a near whisper. She gave him a wink, holding the glass to her lips for a second. The level of liquid hadn’t changed when she pulled it away, and he nodded in approval.

“What now, man?” she asked in a whisper. “You need to get over the fence, like, yeah?”

He grinned at the return of the slang, spoken when she knew it wouldn’t be overheard. “I do, but we need to be seen first. In half an hour or so, I can disappear, and people will assume the old fart wore himself out and needs a nap.”

“As they’re prone to do,” she said, rubbing a finger over his snowy locks. “Especially when they’re trying to keep up with their obscenely young girlfriends.” He choked on the small sip he was taking, coughing to clear his throat as she laughed. “You know they’re all thinking it,” she said with a smirk. And it was true. He’d seen it in the eyes of the guard at the gate, and those outside the mansion. The guests in the foyer had that same knowing look in their eyes when they glanced at the pair.

“Sure, but they could also assume you’re my granddaughter.”

“Great-great-granddaughter,” she said with a sniff.

He decided she was taking far too much enjoyment from poking fun at his apparent age, and he started to hobble through the room. She pulled her arm from the crook of his elbow, following along as if bored with the excruciatingly slow progress.

“Well, aren’t you two just darling,” a woman said as she hurried over to greet them. “I’m Melinsa Hammon. I don’t believe we’ve met.”

“Hector Bodgston,” he said in a croaking voice. “This is…”

“I’m Natali Montoya,” Neela said, reaching out to touch fingers with the woman.

“So nice to meet you. Are you two… a couple?” The woman raised her eyebrows with the question, obviously fishing for gossip she could share with all her friends at the party.

“Madly in love,” Neela said, putting an arm over Kole’s slumped shoulders. “Hector found me on the street one day, swept me off my feet, and we’ve been together ever since.” She smiled widely, leaning her head against his shoulder.

Melinsa took it all in with glee. “Isn’t that nice? It’s always good to see people who don’t let age stand in the way.” Then she hurried off, drawing close to several other women not far away.
