Chapter Seventeen
The foyer of the Pendleton mansion was larger than Rim Jumperâs cargo bay. A dozen liveried staff lined the walls on either side of the room, attentive for the slightest sign that a guest might require something. There were thirty of forty of those guests milling around, greeting friends or new faces before moving on to the other rooms of the house open to the party. Servers carrying trays with drinks and food weaved through it all, with a grace that had to be admired.
Kole picked up two glasses of sparkling wine from one tray, handing a glass to Neela. âSip slowly,â he said in a near whisper. She gave him a wink, holding the glass to her lips for a second. The level of liquid hadnât changed when she pulled it away, and he nodded in approval.
âWhat now, man?â she asked in a whisper. âYou need to get over the fence, like, yeah?â
He grinned at the return of the slang, spoken when she knew it wouldnât be overheard. âI do, but we need to be seen first. In half an hour or so, I can disappear, and people will assume the old fart wore himself out and needs a nap.â
âAs theyâre prone to do,â she said, rubbing a finger over his snowy locks. âEspecially when theyâre trying to keep up with their obscenely young girlfriends.â He choked on the small sip he was taking, coughing to clear his throat as she laughed. âYou know theyâre all thinking it,â she said with a smirk. And it was true. Heâd seen it in the eyes of the guard at the gate, and those outside the mansion. The guests in the foyer had that same knowing look in their eyes when they glanced at the pair.
âSure, but they could also assume youâre my granddaughter.â
âGreat-great-granddaughter,â she said with a sniff.
He decided she was taking far too much enjoyment from poking fun at his apparent age, and he started to hobble through the room. She pulled her arm from the crook of his elbow, following along as if bored with the excruciatingly slow progress.
âWell, arenât you two just darling,â a woman said as she hurried over to greet them. âIâm Melinsa Hammon. I donât believe weâve met.â
âHector Bodgston,â he said in a croaking voice. âThis isâ¦â
âIâm Natali Montoya,â Neela said, reaching out to touch fingers with the woman.
âSo nice to meet you. Are you two⦠a couple?â The woman raised her eyebrows with the question, obviously fishing for gossip she could share with all her friends at the party.
âMadly in love,â Neela said, putting an arm over Koleâs slumped shoulders. âHector found me on the street one day, swept me off my feet, and weâve been together ever since.â She smiled widely, leaning her head against his shoulder.
Melinsa took it all in with glee. âIsnât that nice? Itâs always good to see people who donât let age stand in the way.â Then she hurried off, drawing close to several other women not far away.
